Banská Bystrica
The city of Banská Bystrica is located in Central Slovakia. Banská Bystrica is the most important historical, cultural and economic centre of the Central Slovakia. It is a seat of administration of the Banská Bystrica Region, one of 8 regions of the Slovak Republic. The first written reference about the city is from the year 1255.
Banská Bystrica is situated at the river Hron in the Zvolenská Lowland, close to the Kremnické Vrchy (Kremnické Mountains), Veľká Fatra (Big Fatra) and Nízke Tatry (Low Tatras). While Banská Bystrica’s prosperity used to be derived from copper mining in the distant past, the most important sectors of the local economy are now tourism, timber, and mechanical industry. The municipal strategy of economic development envisages Banská Bystrica as a regional centre of tourism, services, administration, and entrepreneurship.
In the city´s surroundings, there are some other historical monuments, worth to see: a wooden church in Hronsek village, a mansion in Dolná Mičiná, a castle in Slovenská Ľupča and unique sacral monuments in Čerín and Poniky village. A mountain village Špania dolina, a jewel of folk architecture, reminds mining past of „copper Bystrica“.
